  • What is Math Fact Fluency?

    • Math fact fluency is the ability to accurately and quickly recall basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts through conceptual learning, fact strategies, and memorization.  Students need to demonstrate flexibility, appropriate strategy use, efficiency and accuracy in order to master math fact fluency.
    • Students who possess fluency can recall facts with automaticity, which means they typically think no longer than two seconds before responding with the correct answer.

Math Fact Fluency vs Math Fact Automaticity

    • Math fact fluency and math fact automaticity are often used interchangeably.  However, they are not the same thing.  Fluency is the ability to flexibly apply strategies in an efficient and accurate way.  Automaticity is being able to provide an automatic response.

Why is Math Fact Fluency Important?

    • It frees up working memory, allowing students to solve more difficult problems quicker and more accurately
    • It builds confidence in students' math abilities.
