
What is AVID?

AVID, which stands for Achievement Via Individual Determination, is an academic program designed to help students develop the skills they need to succeed in middle school, high school, and college. AVID targets students in the academic middle who have the desire to go to college. AVID students have the willingness to work hard. Each lesson encompasses the strategies of WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading).

What is AVID Elective?
AVID Elective is an elective that if for students who meet the requirements set forth by AVID. Students must have passing grades; good attendance; and the desire to work harder than other students. AVID Elective students apply, go through a small interview process, and are picked by the Nazareth Area Middle School AVID Site team. AVID Elective takes place for sixty (60) school days. This means that if you are in AVID Elective, you will only have four (4) Exploratory classes unlike most students who have six (6).

What is AVID Study Skills?
New in the school year 2024-25, students can sign up to take AVID study skills. In AVID Study Skills, students will learn note-taking skills, organizational skills, binder skills, test-taking skills, time management, and stress management techniques. What are the components of the AVID Elective class?

College Readiness: AVID focuses on preparing students for college by teaching study skills, organizational strategies, note-taking techniques, and critical thinking.

Tutorial Support: AVID students participate in small group tutorial sessions where they collaborate with peers and tutors to discuss challenging coursework and solve problems together.

College and Career Exploration: AVID exposes students to various college and career opportunities through guest speakers, campus visits, and exploration of different fields of study.
