OVERVIEW

  •

As required by the Pennsylvania School Code, public school districts are governed by a school board that is comprised of directors/trustees who serve terms. The school board establishes the vision and goals for the public schools in their district, and they set standards for the performance of schools and superintendents. Most school board members are elected by people in their community to represent their values, views, and desires for the public schools in their district.

Although the law does not give individual powers to school directors beyond their voices and votes at school board meetings, they do have important individual responsibilities in order to be effective in contributing to the board’s collective functions. Essentially, those include the responsibility to faithfully attend meetings, study the information provided to them about district operations in connection with related decisions of the board, abide by district policies and other rules the board adopts to govern its activities, maintain confidentiality of executive session information, and to engage in continuous professional development to keep up with new developments in education policy, best practices, and available resources affecting how public schools serve the educational needs of their community’s children.

Each school board consists of nine members who serve four-year terms of office. Unlike most other elected officials, school directors receive no compensation for their work even though the position can require them to dedicate many hours to it.
