School Nursing Mission StatementSuccess in school requires the enhancement and promotion of optimal health and well-being. Led by a team of certified school nurses, the Health Service Department of the Nazareth Area School District challenges students, family and community to prevent disease, promote and protect health, and minimize the complications of health problems. Our mission is to directly enhance the educational achievement for each student by advocating and promoting health and wellness.- Certified School Nurses - There are five certified school nurses currently employed by the Nazareth Area School District. These five school nurses provide health services to the 6 public schools and 1 nonpublic school. Health information should always be shared with your school nurse, either through a written health history or an individual personal interview. The information given to the school nurse is considered both privileged and confidential. This means the information will be shared only on a need-to-know basis for the safety and well-being of the child. Please contact your school nurse with any questions or to update your child's health history. Your school nurse will periodically send written requests to update health information.
- Associate Nurses - The Certified School Nurses are assisted by a team of Associate Nurses. All of the associate nurses are licensed nurses (LPN or RN). The associate nurses provide the students with general first aid and health care.
- School Physician - The Nazareth Area School District physician does state mandated school physicals for those students who have not had a private examination; written parental consent is required for in-school physical examinations. In addition, the school physician acts as a resource to support the certified school nurses.
- School Dentist - The Nazareth Area School District dentists do state mandated dental examinations for those students who have not completed a private examination. Written parental consent is required for school dental examinations. Please note the dentists will not do cleanings nor will they make dental corrections. If you need help finding dental care, please contact your school nurse. If you would like to know the name of the dentist assigned to your child's school, please call your school nurse.

When should you keep your child home from school?
The following information should be considered a guideline for keeping an ill child home. Parents who have specific questions or concerns should call their school nurse.
1) Colds - What seems like a mild cold with symptoms such as a runny nose may indeed be allergies. If the child does not have a fever or a severe cough, don't keep the child home. On the other hand colds especially those with a fever can be signs of a more serious problem. These children should stay home.2) Fever - Any child with a temperature of 100 degrees or above should stay home until the fever is normal for 24 hours. If the fever is accompanied by a sore throat, earache, nausea, listlessness, or a rash the child may be contagious.
3) Diarrhea or Vomiting - Keep your child home if symptoms will disrupt their day or if you suspect dehydration. If diarrhea or vomiting are accompanied by pain or fever, your child should stay home. When symptoms subside, they may return to school.
4) Strep Throat or Scarlet Fever - Both are highly contagious. These children need antibiotics and may return to school with a doctor’s permission while they are being treated. Remember to complete the prescribed medication.5) Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) - This can be highly contagious depending on the cause. Children can return to school with the permission of the treating doctor. Practice good hand washing.
6) Ear Infections - Children with pain and or fever should remain at home.
7) Chicken Pox - It usually takes about 10 days after the first symptoms before all blisters have crusted over. This is when your child can return to school or when cleared to return by your physician.
8) Lice - Children must be treated before they come to school. Nits must be removed as a part of the treatment. Use an appropriate lice shampoo. If you are not sure about when to keep a child home or have questions about treatment call your child's doctor or your school nurse.Absence Reporting ProceduresIn an effort to keep track of the causes of student absences, we are asking that the following procedure be followed by all parents/guardiansof students.
