Grades 9-12 Science
The philosophy of the Science Department is to foster an environment where students can attain a broad foundation in science as well as acquire the reasoning and problem solving skills needed to become responsible and contributing members of society.
In support of this philosophy, the Science Department is committed to provide students with:
- Students with opportunities to become critical thinkers, problem solvers, and informed decision makers
- Opportunities to experience inquiry-based and content rich instruction to encourage curiosity, analytical thinking, and authentic learning.
- Opportunities to connect new learning to previous knowledge, other content areas, and to real-world applications.
- Skill and science concepts to be scientifically literate in order to succeed in a continually changing world.
Overview of Course Offerings:
The Science department offers a wide range of courses. Students have the opportunity to take Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Science. Electives in Anatomy and Physiology, Genetics, Organic Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, and Astronomy and Meteorology are offered to students. Additionally, students may opt for AP Chemistry, AP Physics 1 & 2, AP Environmental Science or AP Biology in their junior or senior year. Grading is based on tests, quizzes, projects, and lab reports. Written components of tests and exams are imperative at all academic levels. Please follow the course prerequisites when choosing science courses. Biology is a required science for graduation.
