• Grades 9-12 Social Studies

The philosophy of the Social Studies Department is to provide a comprehensive program that engages students and raises civic and global awareness to inspire active and socially responsible citizens through the development of:

Knowledge - Facts, concepts and themes in the fields of history, geography, government and civics, economics, and the social and behavioral sciences

Skills - Research, historical analysis, evaluation, collaboration, communication, and civic participation as well as 21st century skills such as technology and media literacy

The Social Studies Department of Nazareth Area High School offers a number of electives in addition to courses that are required for graduation at each of the four grade levels. Four credits of social studies are required for graduation (one credit per year), with a prescribed course for each grade level. Courses are offered in varying levels including College Prep, Honors, and Advanced Placement.

Grading is done based on quality of work and mastery of knowledge and skills in the social studies. Classroom instruction is diversified to meet student needs and most courses include activities, projects, homework, and alternative assessments.

Students are encouraged to choose from our selection of electives and required courses to better prepare for post-secondary experiences.
